You put a dent in your garage door. Now what do you do? Some people actually keep using the garage door and operating it like they would any other day. There are several reasons why you should never continue to operate a broken or dented garage door after the fact.
Structural Damage to the Other Components
Operating a busted/dented garage can actually cause more damage to your garage. The busted door would require more effort on the part of an opener to open and close. If you do not have an automatic garage door opener, then forcing the door open and closed busts the joists and the tracks every time you force the door one direction or another. Continued use in this fashion creates more structural damage to your garage door that, in turn, creates greater expense when you finally reach out for garage door repair help.
Less Expense vs. Greater Expense
Right now, you just have this dent to repair. It could cost between one hundred and three hundred dollars to repair. If you repair it right away, that is all it will cost you. If you avoid repairing it and and continue to use the garage door as is, you could be looking at a brand-new garage door or a complete garage door set-up and replacement. That is anywhere from five hundred to one thousand five hundred dollars, depending on where you live. Fix it sooner, not later.
You may not think that a damaged garage door can lead to an infestation of pests, but it can. A dent in a garage door panel creates wider slits between the garage door panels. Through the wider openings between the panels above and below the damaged panel, hornets, wasps, spiders, bees, ants, and all other manner of creepy-crawlies can scoot through. (You would be surprised at how flying insects can compress their bodies to slip through these larger openings in your garage door!)
Then you not only have to deal with repairing the garage door, but you also have to call out pest control to deal with your new pest problem. That is double the expense than before, and all for a garage door you could have repaired sooner. Most garage door repair technicians strongly advise that you get the door repaired any way you can, as soon as you can. It is the barrier between your garage and so much more.
