Shielded Metal Arc Welding

This type of welding often goes by either SMAW or stick welding. Metals are joined together by heating them up using an arc that is created between your welding tip and a covered metal electrode. 

Shielded metal arc welding does not work well with really thin metals. This welding process also tends to create a lot of splatter and mess. It is relatively easy to learn. 

This type of welding can be done outdoors. It can be used to weld together aluminum, cast iron, hard surfacing, steel, and stainless steel. It is the only type of welding that works effectively on cast iron. 

Flux Cored Arc Welding

This type of welding often goes by its initials, FCAW. This type of welder looks more like a caulking gun than a welder. Out of the gun, a wire is fed out and an arc is made between the wire and welding machine. This melts the wire as you work.

FCAW welding works best with either stainless steel or steel. It is very easy to learn and to handle since the wire is continuously feed into the unit. It also works on dirty, old and rusty material. This type of welding can be done outside and in windy conditions, making it the ideal type of welding for quick construction repairs.
